“Art Imitates Life, the new album by Pittsburgh’s Hepcat Dilemma, includes a track titled “The Hepcat Motto.” Its sole lyric warns, “If you’re not careful/ in five years/ you will only/ listen to music like this.”
The stop-start groove of the song turns at one point into a quasi-classic rock guitar solo, but just as quickly shifts back to an odd time signature riff. If the band is referring to their sound as “music like this,” maybe it’s not a bad thing. “

” Outsider sounds. This would have fit nicely on the Alternative Tentacles catalog circa 1989… This falls somewhere between TRAGIC MULATTO, ZAPPA, and VICTIMS FAMILY. “

Hepcat in the News
“Working in the spirit of Wire, Pere Ubu and other art-punk pioneers, the Bob Loiselle-fronted Hepcat debuted in 1994 with “The Bongs Are Flying” and over the next decade released a series of albums, including “Erutangis” and “Psyclotomis Rex,” leaving off with the 2002 concept album “Overend.”
It came to a halt in 2003 when one of the band’s two drummers, Byron Glatz, split, followed by the death of bassist Chuck McPherson in 2005. Since then, the members could be found in the bands Didi Mau and Junk Fingers.
Jump to 2012 when drummer E Hood sent out a call for a Hepcat Dilemma reunion, with him and Loiselle joined by ex-Salina Catalina bassist Chris Colpo.
The result of that reunion is “Art Imitates Life,” a nine-song comeback album recorded at Hollywood Studios with Matt Vaughan that taps back into the angular, slashing weirdness…”
